Democracy

Happy Independence Day to all my American friends.

This songs sends chills down my spine. I'm not sure what exactly it means, but I do think that it expresses an optimism about the future of American democracy. I hope you will find it appropriate for today.

Cute. Ironic.

But it's coming here, anyway:

Sorry about that Chris - and thanks for finding that link of Leonard Cohen's performance of this song at his concert in London a few years ago.

Actually, I first heard this song a few weeks ago because my wife and I rented a DVD of that London concert. We were fans of Cohen back in the 60's but hadn't followed his career recently. There are some other great songs on the concert DVD from more recent years, along with performances of the classics from the 60's. I definitely recommend listening to the CD or DVD of the London concert if his music appeals to you at all.

It's true: In July 2009 there was hope for Democracy was coming to the USA. That was then; this is now. Now? Not so much.

Cheer up Doc. You're a sailor. Surely you know that the mighty ship of state will sail on past the reefs of greed, through the squalls of hate.

By the way the song was first released on a 1992 Cohen CD.
