Saturday Spam-a-palooza

As you may have noticed I have been moderating comments on this blog for the last few weeks because too many spam comments seem to be have been getting past Google's spam filters. I must admit it has been an eye opener. Some of the spam is actually quite creative!

Here are few of my favorite spam comments from the last couple of weeks. It goes without saying that none of the spam comments had any connection to the topic of the post, and they all included links to websites which were nothing to do with the theme of this blog. Enjoy...

It's a shame you don't have a donate button! I'd without a doubt donate to this brilliant blog!

Smoking cannabis also exposes others to your medicine through second-hand inhalation and while you might appreciate the skunky, pungent aroma, others may not. Their no-good lazy bums that just sit around all day.

Paragraph writing is also a excitement, if you be acquainted with after that you can write otherwise it is difficult to write.

It seems that most liberal arts schools are populated by heavy drinkers and partiers, that i is not interested in. Basically can, Let me double in creative writing and journalism. Thank you!. Have a look at my web blog - transvaginal mesh compensation

Try to change positions frequently, as remaining in one position may irritate or make hemorrhoids worsen.

Who writes this stuff?

Are robots really this funny?

Which is your favorite?

do you have anything without spam in it?

I'm just a tad curious what "transvaginal mesh compensation" could be...

So am I. So am I.

Thanks to the Mandiant report released this week, it is now clear that many of these intrusions may originate in a PLA building in Shanghai. Comments like these are probably crafted by the hacker minions while on their chai break from more serious infiltrations.

I sense a lot of contemptual envy for western bloggers... "their no good lazy bums that just sit around all day". That and transvaginal envy.

Or maybe these spammers are recent American liberal arts graduates who aren't qualified for any real job, and who spent their college years sniffing the skunky, pungent aroma, while sitting on their no-good lazy bums getting hemorrhoids and transvaginal envy, while trying to capture the excitement of writing paragraphs? Do they work in some concrete office building in New Haven and hang out at the Playwright pub every evening?

This best to read blog ever! What are clever the ideas to make? And such colors and design - can somewhere there be the software to make what it happens?

Oh sorry, I'm experimenting with new ways to get people to read my comments and was thinking the spammers may be on to something.

We could be witnessing the birth of a new form of literature without realizing it. Most major breakthroughs in the arts are unrecognized or ridiculed when they first appear. The spammers could just be way ahead of their time.

I think this may be similar to the exploration of 'free verse' about a hundred years ago. Poets found it liberating to be free of the traditional poetic constraints of meter and rhyme. The spammers are just taking that a step further, by freeing themselves of the constraints of grammar, diction, and spelling.

Maybe, in 20 years or so, there will be awards shows on TV celebrating the best achievements in spam - The Spammies. Or there might even be a Tillerman writing challenge to create the best example of spam.

LOL. When I read the first two sentences of the previous comment I really thought it was another spammer and was just about to click on the "spam" button when I saw who had written it. Well done sir.

I think you are right in saying that spam is a new form of literature. It crossed my mind that I could collect all the best examples over a few months and publish a book of them. It might even be a best seller. i would be famous. And rich!

Or has that been done before?

It has become an ongoing chore to trim the spammer comments and I have thought about switching captchas back on.

One recent spam clammed to be the author of one on of last year's posts which was creative - or worryingly means I've been sleep commenting. It then went on to say "in this way there'll be no shortage of people at the party" but alas not where or when it was.

I did for a while try to keep some of the more entertaining spam comments but Blogger auto-deletes spam: you can't keep it unless you allowing to be shown

Trust me, Skipper: it would not be a best seller.

What bothers me a lot recently are spamming links embedded into otherwise very readable and meritorious text on the internet. I see it frequently in Blooger blogs and even in some comments. It's recognizable by double underscoring. Actually, now that I think about it, it's not just a Blogger problem. You can't even read the mainstream media's news without encountering it. Totally malicious ....

Amen brother! The amount of spam comments I'm receiving has quadrupled over the last 2 weeks.

Yup - those are funny. It the same reason I've taken to moderating comments on mine as well, though I think yours are more inventive.

Pleased to hear that I'm not the only one experiencing a surge in spam comments evading the Google filters. I thought I might be being singled out for some reason.

One extra measure I've started taking in the last day or two is that when I see one of my old posts attracting a lot of spam, I go back and edit that post to disallow any more comments at all on that post. I may just be playing whack-a-mole but we will see.

One particularly inventive spam comment I've seen a few times recently says something like, "Do you have a spam issue on this blog?" and then offers to provide techniques and procedures to deal with spam - before posting a link to a page on some totally spurious subject!

I don't understand anyone blogging with Blogger accounts having troublesome spam. I turn comment moderation on for post 3-4 weeks old. Works perfectly. I Blogger sometimes send them to me in email, but when I check my blog, they're not there.

If you turn captcha on, that's a major deterent to my commenting. (that might be a good thing.) Just speaking for myself.

Tillerman said...

That's basically what I used to do until recently Doc. In fact I think I used comment moderation for posts older than 2 weeks.

But then a lot of comment spam started hitting recent posts, so I turned moderation on for all posts. Now I get several spam comments a day that I delete while moderating. (Probably more get caught by the filters and put in the spam folder.)

The amount of spam beating the filters has definitely increased in the past few months. And it sounds like I am not the only one having this experience.

I don't like having to use moderation like this, but I would rather do this than turn captcha on.

This post, I suppose, is part of my philosophy that when God give you spam, make spam-a-palooza.

I also have seen a major increase. One technique I hadn't seen before was an angry comment - saying basically I written a lousy post and seemed only interested in showing off, etc etc. I hope that was spam - I certainly told Blogger it was.

That might have been the grumpy old geezer Laser sailor from Rhode Island. He sometimes leaves comments like that. Although never on your excellent blog as far as he can recall.

Same on the excess spam here. And I'm supposed to like spam. I haven't had too many slip through, I've been on the "moderate after two weeks" plan for a long time and that's mostly still working, but it used to be a genuine rarity to find something in the to-be-moderated folder and now there's always stuff in there. I wasn't on line much over the weekend and there were 10 spams waiting for moderation when I signed on this morning. Have also had a few actually making it through the filters onto recent posts.

My recent faves - the one where the spammer insults the other commenters (I think somebody else got this one recently and had some fun with the zombie commenter idea - Capt JP maybe?):

"I don't write a ton of comments, however I looked at a lot of comments here 'The Long and the Short Of It -- 2012 Great North River Tugboat Race Part 2'. I do have a couple of questions for you if it's okay. Is it only me or does it look like like a few of these remarks come
across like they are written by brain dead individuals? :-P" -

And then this really disjointed number from Mr. Telenfonsex...:

"This is especially important of the other kid just doesn't seem to be 'taking the hint' that your own child wants to be left alone. Search out God for your life in everything that you do. Even after he cheated on you and had sex with another woman."

Well ok then...

I am a little disappointed that Google has not improved its filters to deal with the latest surge of spam. One very obvious thing that you think could be filtered out easily is all those spam comments which have the ω symbol instead of a w in words.... as in this gem:

"Great ωebsіte. А lοt of usеful info heге. I am ѕеnding it to severаl palѕ аns additionallу shаrіng in ԁeliciοus. Аnd оf сoursе, thank уou in yοuг swеаt!"

LOL. I got a couple of the "Is it only me or does it look like like a few of these remarks come across like they are written by brain dead individuals?" spam comments today.
